What is it Really Like to be a Financial Consultant Mum in Singapore?

Career Oct 31, 2025

Many Singaporean mothers feel they face an impossible choice - build a meaningful career or prioritize their family. The search for flexible jobs for mums that offer real growth often ends in frustrating compromises.

But what if you did not have to choose?

To show you what this looks like in reality, we sat down with Su Hui for a candid conversation. As a mother to two active boys (ages 4 and 8), she is a perfect example of how to build a high-growth career that fits a family schedule.

What makes her story so compelling for mums considering a career change? Su Hui started her journey into financial services with a non-finance diploma and has built a career that allows her to be fully present for school pickups and even take business trips for professional growth.

We dove into the questions every mum is thinking. In this chat, Su Hui shares the real story of her challenges and what work-life balance truly means. Here is our honest, unfiltered conversation.

You started with a non-finance diploma. How did you overcome that barrier and start your journey in financial services?

Su Hui: My first job was a clinic assistant after graduating from Poly. The opportunity came to me randomly when my former tuition teacher encouraged me to look into this industry despite having no finance background.

I was hesitant, so I consulted my dad. His advice was simple and direct, "Give it a try and don’t limit yourself." That was the push I needed.

Honestly, I went in without overthinking it. I adopted a "never try, never know" attitude and decided to give it a shot. I took the pressure off by telling myself I would commit for two years, and if it wasn’t a fit, I could always move on. And that’s how my journey in this career really began.

You switched from a tied insurance agency to finexis' platform. What drove that decision for personal and career growth?

Su Hui: After six years with a tied insurance agency, I felt my business had become stagnant and simply wasn't growing. My previous company only offered in-house insurance products, but I knew my clients deserved more.

Today, clients are much savvier. They are looking for holistic advice and cost-effective solutions, not a single product from one brand. With an open architecture platform like finexis advisory, I have access to a much wider range of plans and provide tailored advice that truly serves my clients' best interests.

It wasn't just about the business tools, though. The culture in my previous company didn't align with what I was looking for. I knew I needed to find a place that would give me room to grow, both personally and professionally.

With two young children, what does a "flexible" work day actually look like for you?

Su Hui: My typical workday is structured around my family's rhythm. It starts at 6 am when I wake the kids and send them to school. Afterwards, I make time for myself with a morning walk before having breakfast and starting my focused work, which includes most of my client meetings.

Around 1 pm, my "mum hat" is back on. I pick up my son from school, settle his lunch, and help with homework before his enrichment classes. This is where the flexible nature of our work really shines. I can easily take a Zoom appointment while waiting for him to finish class. The ability to meet clients online instead of only face-to-face is a great for my work-life balance.

I also set firm boundaries to protect our time. I choose not to work on weekends and keep weekends strictly for family. I typically work three to five days a week, depending on what my kids need. This career’s flexibility allows me to manage my own time and be truly present for their milestones as they grow.

And it goes beyond the daily schedule. I recently qualified for a business development trip to Shenzhen and my husband tagged along. It turned a work trip into a wonderful short getaway for us ❤️. That's a level of freedom I never experienced before.

A business trip with young kids seems tough. How do you manage that level of professional growth?

Su Hui: Honestly, I didn't plan to qualify for the incentive trip to Shenzhen. My day-to-day focus was simply on my work, my goals, and doing right by my clients.

The mentorship and support from my leader made a huge difference. He was the one who encouraged me to stretch myself and work towards the incentive trip for the exposure.

So, I stayed consistent. I continued focusing on helping my clients build their wealth, and the results came naturally. It proves that success in this career comes from steady, focused effort, not from sacrificing your life.

The trip was a great learning opportunity, interacting with top consultants within and outside of finexis. I gained new insights that allow me to serve my clients better. This trip is a perfect example of the professional development for working mothers that is possible in this career.

What is your advice for a mum who feels stuck but is scared to try something new?

Su Hui: As a mum, I know that having control over my own time is the most valuable thing, and the truth is, not many careers in Singapore offer real flexibility for mums.

My advice is to be practical and brave. First, set a clear timeframe for yourself. When I started, I gave myself two years. This isn't an irreversible decision. It is a dedicated period to see if this career change for you is the right fit. And this approach takes away the initial pressure and fear.

Most importantly, adopt a "never try, never know" mindset. We often underestimate what we are capable of! Give yourself a chance to explore this career path. You have nothing to lose, and you might just surprise yourself with what you can achieve when you find a career that finally fits your life.

A huge Thank You ❤️ to Su Hui for sharing her honest and inspiring journey with us.

Her story is a powerful reminder that mums do not have to choose between a meaningful career and being present for your family. It shows that with the right platform, support, and mindset, it is possible to build a career that fits your life, not the other way around.

If Su Hui's experience resonates with you and you are ready to take her "never try, never know" advice to heart, we invite you to start your own exploration. This is not about making a commitment, it is about having a conversation.
